Marie Clement is one of my favourite characters from 'The Journey Away' and I had to feature her again. In 'The Journey Home' she plays an even bigger part in helping Lewis find his destiny. Here's her opening scene...
“That’s Chantal Duboir, the ladies champion,” said Emma who was still at Gavin’s side, “and her girlfriend, Marie Clement, who’s a celebrated author.”
Gavin noticed the taller of the women nod in his direction, politely acknowledging him before going over to join Jim and Mike. The other woman paid no attention to the tennis clique that was forming and headed straight in his direction.
“You must be the big dour Scotsman! A pleasure - Marie Clement,” she announced, then surprised Gavin by reaching up and pulling the giant downwards in order to kiss him on the cheeks - a gesture no less French than her heavy Parisian accent and the sublime perfume she was wearing. “It’s Gavin, isn’t it? Thank you for joining us - it’s very good of you to have agreed. I know it must be difficult with all the press attention. Lewis is such a cad - no subtlety at all. If he liked the look of you on television then he should have got your number and called you in person rather than announcing it on national television. I did enjoy it, though... quite made my day.”
